Athletic Code
MARSH VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL
ATHLETIC CODE

I. ELIGIBILITY

A student participating as a member of a high school team may not participate as a member of any other
team in a like contest during that sport season.

In Order to Try out

1. IHSAA rules. Trimester Credit Rule. In order to be eligible to participate in interscholastic athletics during
any trimester after completion of the first trimester of the ninth grade, a student must have passed, during
the immediately preceding trimester, at least 5 classes which grant a trimester of credit toward graduation.
Students need to maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0. If student does not have a 2.0, a graduation plan must be
place and monitored to insure student remains on track to graduate with his/her graduating class.

In Order to Practice

1. A physician=s clearance/physical to play must be signed and on file at the school.
Sophomores and Seniors with physicals on file need to submit an interim form.
2. A Drug Testing Consent Form will be on file for each year.
3. Athletic Contract signed by student and parent.
4. The athlete must be covered by insurance in the event of injury or the parent must sign a release to
assume the financial responsibility for injuries.
5. Transportation fees must be submitted to the office and the receipt shown to the coach. Transportation
fees per year are $60 (first sport) $40 (second sport) $20 (third sport) or $220 for family.
6. Spirit pack fees, camps etc. are submitted to the office and receipts are shown to coaches.
7. All records must be in order and forms must be on file at the high school before the student is eligible to
participate in any athletic program. All forms are submitted to coach. Coach is responsible for forms and fee
records. Coach copies forms and is required to keep a copy of physicals with them at practices games etc.
The original copies are secured in the office. Coach also monitors transportation fee payment.

In Order to Participate in a Game

Practice Rule. - Athletic participants must have ten (10) days of practices before the athlete is eligible to
compete in an athletic contest unless a waiver has been granted because of participation in an overlapping
sort, i.e. football season is extended because of state playoffs and goes past the official starting date for
basketball.


Registration and Grade Rule. B To be eligible during a school trimester for participation in interscholastic
activities, a student must:

a. Be properly registered.
b. Be carrying a minimum of five (5) classes that lead to the granting of credit toward graduation.
c. Cumulative GPA of 2.0 as outlined In Order to Try out guidelines.
d. At discretion of coach, grading rules may be stricter than state guidelines
e. If a student wanting to participate, has 4 passing grades from the previous grading period, he/she must
makeup the failing grade via on line/correspondence etc. The class taken, if it was a failed required class,
must be the same content matter. If the class to be made up is an elective, any made up elective will be
accepted. Student must complete and have a passing grade in the class before they may participate in
contests.


Attendance Rule

a. Be in regular attendance at school and in classes in which you are enrolled.
b. In order to practice or play in a game, a student must be in attendance one-half day unless he/she was
cleared through coach or principal.


PARTICIPATION GUIDELINES


II. Training Rules

Basic Training Rule B An athlete will be ineligible for athletic participation or practice for that sport season
for the following:
1. Smoking or chewing tobacco or possession of
2. Influence or possession of illegal drugs
3. Influence or possession of alcohol

Immediate suspension from the team will result from any of the following:
1. Violation of the eligibility rules
2. Violation of basic training rules

First time offenders will be suspended for one or two games/matches depending on the length of the sport
season. Ten games in a season will be one suspension and 18-20 games will be a two game suspension.
Second time offenders will be dismissed from the team.

Suspension from the team for a period of time to be determined by coach/principal may result from the
following:
1. Insubordination

2. Unsportsmanship conduct
3. Fighting during or after an athletic contest
4. Stealing
5. Other disciplinary situation, which may arise.

Equipment issued to an athlete is his/her responsibility for return or replacement. If the equipment is not
returned, replace, or paid for, the letter award shall not be awarded nor any further equipment issued to the
participant for any sport.

With administration approval, coaches may establish additional training rules, schedules, curfews, dress
codes, grooming etc. for each sport. It is the responsibility of the head coach of each sport to go over the
athletic code and team rules, etc. in a meeting prior to the start of the season.

Additional Team Rules

1. On all road trips, athletes and managers should be appropriately dressed.
2. Dress code to include grooming will be set by the school and each individual head coach. Players should
be positive representatives of the school.
3. Athletes must return home from road games with the team unless parents of the player advise the coach
that he/she will return with them. A written note must accompany a player from his/her parents if any other
parent is going to take the player home.
4. All athletes will adhere to the District Random Drug Testing Policy.
